York’s Merchant Adventurers Appoint Renowned Heritage Specialist As New Governor
![Professor Sarah Brown]()
Professor Sarah Brown
Professor Sarah Brown has been appointed Governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York for 2026–27, continuing a tradition established since the organisation’s foundation in 1357.
Having previously served as Deputy Governor, Professor Sarah Brown will now lead, as chair of trustees, a team of 18 assistants, oversee seven committees and represent a membership of over 170. In her new role, she will further strengthen the company’s position as a driving force in York’s economic development—promoting enterprise, supporting commercial ventures, maintaining and enhancing the historic Merchant Adventurers’ Hall for public benefit, and inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Until her retirement in 2025, she served as Director of the York Glaziers Trust, where she led the care of York Minster’s internationally significant collection of historic stained glass. Her work included overseeing the conservation of the Great East Window and launching a major strategic plan for stained glass conservation at the Minster.
Jim Richardson, Clerk of the Merchant Adventurers, explained: “Professor Sarah Brown’s appointment as Governor marks a significant moment for the company. Her exceptional leadership in the heritage sector, academic excellence, combined with her civic commitment to the city of York, makes her ideally placed to guide our work in supporting enterprise, preserving our historic legacy, and contributing to York’s continued economic development. We are confident that under her guidance, the Merchant Adventurers’ will continue to play a vital role in supporting business, nurturing talent and contributing to the economic and cultural life of York.”
During her year as Governor Sarah has several events planned focused on the business of heritage, highlighting the connection between entrepreneurship in the city, heritage and art. She will also oversee the installation of a new stained-glass window at the Hall, again bringing together her expertise in the area and her role as Governor. Sarah has been a keen supporter of the Merchant Adventurers’ Charity Beer Festival, in her role as Governor she will open this years’ festival.
The move coincides with the appointment of Jenni Bartram as Junior Warden. Having joined the Company in 2013 Jenni offers a wealth of experience from both her time as a member and from her distinguished law career. It follows the inauguration of Dr. Delma Tomlin, MBE, who made history in April 2022 by becoming the first female Governor.
