Another midweek of high-octane action awaits from around the world of sports. From the World Cup in America to drama closer to home, there is much to take in no matter which sport you love.
Monday 6th July: FIFA World Cup: Portugal v Spain 20:00
The Round of 16 in the World Cup is once again reaching levels of intrigue that we come to expect from the world’s premier sports tournament.
With Mexico's and England’s battle in the early hours setting the tone, another titanic battle takes place as Portugal meet with neighbours Spain in Arlington.
Every knockout round for the Portuguese brings fresh assumptions of whether it will be the last time we see Cristiano Ronaldo on the world stage. That fate almost came true during their Round of 32 match with Croatia as a goal early in the second half from Pašalić put Portugal on the back foot.
Then up stepped Ronaldo with a vital penalty to even things up before a goal in the fourth minute of injury time from Ramos wrapped up a 2-1 win.
Spain’s path to the last 16 was much more routine as they faced off with an Austria side that hardly laid a glove on the 2010 World Champions.
Two goals from Oyarzabal and a delightful finish from Porro gave Spain a 3-0 lead and a wealth of confidence now in a tournament that started on the wrong foot with a draw to Cape Verde.
With a battle of these two Iberian giants looking to be one of the best matchups of the knockouts so far, much is to be expected with the two no doubt laying everything on the line in what could prove to be a historic result.

Thursday 9th July Betfred Super League: York RLFC v Hull FC 20:00
Super League returns back to normal after a feisty Magic Weekend display, with rivals clashing and scores being settled at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
For York, it was a magic weekend as they put in a solid performance against the Huddersfield Giants. Taking a 14-6 lead at half time before a flurry of four converted tries in just 19 minutes, which created a mountain too high for the Giants, York ran out 36-24 winners.
That win signalled their first-ever back-to-back victories in Super League after they overcame a closely fought tie in West Yorkshire in the previous round by beating Castleford 20-14, ending a six-match losing run.
Hull FC’s weekend was more mediocre than magic as they faced off with bitter rivals Hull KR. Two tries in the opening 23 minutes set the tone for the Robins, who went on to put in a good defensive display, restricting FC to just two tries and winning the match 26-12.
The defeat was FC’s third on the spin after being taken down by Wigan and Wakefield in recent weeks. Their only consolation has been a 36-12 victory over the Giants in mid-June, but other than that it has been a torrid time with just one victory in their last eight matches.
It has been a season to forget for FC as a whole, as they have failed to really get off the ground in 2026 with just five wins from 17, which has them in tenth position in the table.
With York finally gaining a bit of momentum, they will be hoping they can once again pick up some points to lift them from their current position of 13th, and a win against Hull would mean they leapfrog the East Yorkshire side, as they are currently level on points.
