Whats On This Week 1st September
Tuesday 2nd September EFL Trophy Bradford City v Grimsby Town 19:30
After the conclusion of the
EFL Cup's second round last week,
Bradford will host giant killers
Grimsby Town in an
EFL Trophy battle between Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
The Mariners are coming into this off the back of a night that will live long in the memory of Grimsby Town for decades, as they beat Manchester United on penalties at Blundell Park to knock the powerhouse Premier League team out of the tournament.
Grimsby looked the better team for the majority of the match and looked to be as at home playing them as their League Two opponents. In the fourth tier they have got off to a flying start with three wins, two draws and just a single loss, which was thanks to a 1-0 Bristol Rovers win at the weekend, which has them placed in eighth.
Bradford, making their first return to League One since the 2018/19 season, has also started swiftly. An unbeaten run of six matches, including four wins, is enough to have them flirting with automatic promotion in third spot at this early stage.
The Bantams gave out an upset of their own when they travelled to the Bet365 Stadium and handed Championship Stoke City a 3-0 defeat, which saw Bradford progress to face Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Wednesday 3rd September Enterprise National league Halifax Town v Woking 19:45
The
National League is well underway, and this week there is a battle between north and south as
Halifax Town hosts
Woking in round seven.
Halifax are battling to go better than last season when they finished sixth and qualified for the playoffs, where their campaign in the tournament ended at the first hurdle when they were dumped out 4-0 by eventual winners Oldham.
So far this season they have been far away from their previous form in the league, as they have just two wins in six matches, which has them sitting in 13th.
Woking will also be hoping to go further than their last season's finish, as they ended up in fifteenth with 58 points. So far this season they have also been very lacklustre in their attempt at improvement, as they currently find themselves occupying the last relegation spot in 21st. Which is a sign of improvement, as prior to their 2-0 win over Morecambe at the weekend, they found themselves rock bottom.
There was little to separate the two sides when they met last season, with just one goal scored across two games, which came from Halifax’s Capello in a 1-0 win at the Shay. The reverse fixture and the last time the two sides met ended as a 0-0 draw.

Venue: The Shay Stadium, Halifax

Thursday 4th September Betfred Super League Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos 20:00
The first Yorkshire derby in the
Super League this week is a battle between two sides from the west with differing expectations, as playoff hopefuls
Leeds take the short journey to the John Smith's Stadium to meet
Huddersfield Giants.
The hosts have had a less than fortuitous time in the Super League this season, with just six wins in 24 matches that have left them on 12 points and third from the bottom.
Despite the torrid time for the most part, the Giants have picked up recently, with half of their season’s wins coming in the past month as they vanquished Hull FC, Catalan Dragons and Warrington.
However, the Giants’ last match was not a positive one, as they were taken apart in another West Yorkshire derby against Wakefield in a 48-2 drubbing.
The Rhinos, on the other hand, are flirting with a top two finish, as they are in third with just a point difference separating them and Wigan in second.
They have been on a stellar run of form in August, remaining unbeaten with four wins from four, including two wins over fellow top six opponents in Leigh and league leaders Hull KR.
The Giants will be hoping for some revenge after their last trip to Headingley in the reverse fixture when they were soundly beaten 28-6 in April. For the Rhinos it would be another chance to potentially take their place in the top two for the first time this year, but a loss could send them hurtling down the playoff fixture with both Leigh and St Helens breathing down their neck.
Date: 04/09/2025
Time: 20:00
Venue: John Smiths Stadium, Huddersfield

Friday 5th September Betfred Super League Castleford Tigers v Wakefield Trinity 20:00
Another day, another West Yorkshire meet up in Super League with two clubs that share a postal zone clashing in what is another battle between two sides on differing ends of the scale.
Castleford is second bottom of Super League with just ten points. With new management under Danny McGuire at the start of the campaign proving no good he was dismissed in early July with just four wins.
Since then the managerless tigers have only managed to pick up one victory and have lost five on the spin coming into the derby.
Wakefield are hanging onto their playoff status in sixth spot with Hull FC just one point behind them. The new boys for this season have been a surprise package as they have come above all expectations to put in what could be a successful campaign with still the spine of the Championship winning team in place.
Their recent results have been inconsistent though with a 44-2 loss away at Wigan being rectified last week in a similarly heavy 48-2 victory at home to Huddersfield.
With just three games remaining including the derby time is running out for Wakefield if they want to continue to consolidate themselves and finish in the playoffs. For Castleford it will be a case of ensuring improved performances and signs of life for next season when they will be hoping to move up the league under newly announced head coach Ryan Carr.
Date: 05/09/2025
Time: 20:00
Venue: Wheldon Road, Castleford
