Volvo ES90 Launch Review

There’s something rather reassuring about a Volvo. I’ve owned a few. Not exciting in the shouty, chest-thumping sense, nor especially concerned with turning heads, but reassuring in the way a well-built dry stone wall is reassuring – solid, purposeful, and quietly confident in its own abilities.

The new Volvo ES90, the Swedish firm’s latest foray into the fully electric executive saloon market, leans heavily into that identity and, rather refreshingly, doesn’t try too hard to be anything it’s not.

At first glance, the ES90 looks every inch the modern Volvo. Clean lines, a gently assertive stance, and that familiar 'Thor’s Hammer' lighting signature give it presence. It doesn’t bristle with unnecessary creases or attempt to mimic the more theatrical designs coming out of Germany. Instead, it’s restrained, almost architectural, like a particularly tasteful piece of Scandinavian furniture that’s found its way onto four wheels.

Step inside, and the calm continues. Volvo has long been a master of interior design, and the ES90 is no exception. The cabin is airy, uncluttered, and built around sustainable materials that feel both premium and thoughtfully chosen. There’s a pleasing absence of fuss: no gratuitous chrome and no overbearing gloss black surfaces waiting to collect fingerprints. Instead, you get natural textures, soft lighting, and seats that remain among the most comfortable in the business—something your back will thank you for after a run down the motorway.




The technology, as you’d expect, is front and centre. A large central touchscreen controls most functions, supported by Google’s built-in system, which works with commendable speed and clarity. It’s largely intuitive, though like many modern systems it does ask you to trust software over physical buttons—a leap not everyone will take willingly. Still, voice control is effective, and once you’ve acclimatised, the layout makes sense.

On the road, the ES90 behaves exactly as a Volvo should. It’s composed, measured, and supremely comfortable. This is not a car that encourages you to attack a B-road like you’re late for last orders. Instead, it settles into a rhythm, smoothing out poor surfaces and insulating you from the outside world with admirable competence. In the UK—where potholes appear to breed overnight—this is no small achievement.
The electric drivetrain delivers power in that familiar, seamless fashion EV drivers have come to expect. Acceleration is brisk rather than brutal, and it suits the character of the car perfectly. You won’t find yourself grinning like a fool at every traffic light, but you will appreciate the effortless surge when joining a motorway or overtaking dawdling traffic on your favourite country lane.

Range and charging are, inevitably, key considerations. Volvo claims figures that place the ES90 firmly within the competitive set, and in real-world driving it appears capable of covering substantial distances without inducing range anxiety. Fast-charging capability means you can top up reasonably quickly on longer journeys, though, as ever in the UK, the experience will depend as much on the reliability of the charging network as the car itself.

Safety, of course, remains a Volvo cornerstone. The ES90 is packed with the latest driver assistance systems, many of which operate unobtrusively in the background. Unlike some rivals, which seem determined to remind you of their presence at every opportunity, Volvo’s approach is more measured. The systems are there when you need them, rather than constantly clamouring for attention.

There are, however, a few mild irritations. The reliance on the touchscreen for basic functions can occasionally feel like overreach, particularly when adjusting settings on the move. And while the minimalist interior is undeniably elegant, some may find it lacks a touch of warmth or personality compared to more traditionally appointed rivals.

Yet these are small quibbles in what is otherwise a thoroughly well-judged package. The ES90 doesn’t attempt to reinvent the electric saloon; instead, it refines it, applying Volvo’s longstanding values—safety, comfort, and understated design—to a new era of motoring.

In a market increasingly crowded with attention-seeking alternatives, there’s something rather appealing about a car that simply gets on with the job. The Volvo ES90 won’t shout the loudest, nor will it try to be the most thrilling. But for those who value calm competence, thoughtful design, and a sense that their car has been engineered with genuine care, it may well be one of the most compelling choices on the road today.
