Region’s Best Buildings Named At 2026 RIBA Yorkshire Awards
The imaginative restoration of a historic hall, two contemporary additions to York Minster supporting heritage craft and technology, and a bold contemporary rural home are among the five winners of the 2026 RIBA Yorkshire Awards.
This year’s cohort is particularly significant as the awards mark their 60th anniversary. Since 1966, the RIBA Awards have recognised the best architecture across the UK, capturing the shifting expectations of what architecture can contribute to society.
The 2026 Yorkshire awards were announced at a ceremony on 13 May, at which Heritage Quad: York Minster Centre of Excellence by Tonkin Liu Architects was named as winner of RIBA Yorkshire Building of the Year Award 2026 (sponsored by dormakaba). The jury praised it as an “masterfully composed piece of architecture”, noting how it offers “a compelling model for how heritage institutions can evolve with integrity, strengthening their relevance while remaining firmly anchored in their cultural and civic responsibilities. ”.

Yorkshire’s winning projects reveal a region brimming with craft, ambition, and cultural confidence. Visiting them in person showed an extraordinary breadth of skill – from the poetic renewal of Calverley Old Hall to the civic clarity of Wellington Place and the masterful handling of the York Minster Centre of Excellence. Together they paint a picture of a region where heritage, innovation, and environmental responsibility are shaping architecture of real depth and purpose, rooted in place yet boldly forward‑looking.

This is a landmark year for RIBA as we mark 60 years of our Awards and the impact of past winners on society. Over six decades, the Awards have charted a cultural journey across the UK, reflecting how architecture has responded to changing needs in education, industry, work and home life. Today, as in 1966, we celebrate architecture that sets new standards for how we live and shape our communities - and reminds us just how important it is to keep raising the bar.
RIBA President, Chris Williamson
RIBA Yorkshire Award winners will now be considered for a highly coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced on 9 July. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year.
