Pride In Diversity Awards Finalists Honoured At Sparkling Leeds Launch Event

People, charities and businesses from across Yorkshire who are finalists in the second Pride in Diversity Awards came together with judges and sponsors at a launch event hosted by The Viaduct on 6th May, ahead of the main awards night.

The aim is to highlight work across Yorkshire to support members of the community who face additional barriers when accessing public services and employment or simply enjoying daily life. This can be due to a range of factors, including race, neurodiversity, disability, sexuality, and gender identity.

Finalists include Morgan Sindall, who operate in West and South Yorkshire, St Gemma’s Hospice, and Beeston-based crisis charity Women’s Whispers. There’s also a new ‘Youth Voice’ category to recognise people aged 21 or under with a can-do attitude to creating change. The launch was an opportunity for everyone to celebrate, make new connections and explore ways to help and support each other.

As well as celebrating individual and team achievements, the awards aim to advance the

level of funding for vital services, introduce new opportunities for collaboration, and create a more inclusive environment for everyone. The seven judges include Leeds Rhinos legend Jamie Jones Buchanan MBE, now the team’s Director of Culture, Diversity and Inclusion. Broadcaster Stephanie Hirst is also on the panel, as are the Lord Mayor of Leeds Dan Cohen, and author and presenter Jono Lancaster.

The host is LGBTQ+ ambassador Matt Jameson, who shot to fame as half of Married at First Sight’s first same sex couple. He said:

"It remains vital to recognise and celebrate the people who are working selflessly in our communities to uplift and remove barriers for people from diverse backgrounds. We want to show that diverse communities can be united by rather than divided by our differences, especially in light of the harmful rhetoric that’s so prevalent in today’s media".

So far the awards have raised £1,700 for chosen charity Out Together, which works to

overcome the cultural and social barriers that can prevent LGBTQ+ individuals enjoying later life with dignity. This year’s awards will raise funds for Getting Clean, who are returning to showcase the impact of their 2025 Charity of the Year win.

The official ceremony is on 18th June at First Direct Bank Arena. Tickets and more information can be found on the website at prideindiversity.co.uk.
