LNER is inviting the public to a special Evensong service at Doncaster Minster to celebrate the life and work of famous railway engineer, Sir Nigel Gresley, ahead of the 150th anniversary of his birth.

Sir Nigel Gresley was the former Chief Engineer of the original LNER and was an industry pioneer. He designed some of the most well-known steam engines in the world, including Mallard and Flying Scotsman, built in the heart of Doncaster city centre at its famous Works alongside the station.

An Evensong service, organised by the present-day LNER, is the first in a weekend of events planned by different organisations to mark this key anniversary. It will be held at the Minster Church of St George on Church Street, Doncaster at 6pm on Thursday 18 June 2026.

Open to all, whether of faith or none, the service has been designed to feel accessible and welcoming to everyone and will reflect on Gresley’s contribution to railway history and the enduring impact of his work.

During the service, there will be hymns, readings, and music from the Minster’s choir, the LNER Male Voice Quartet, and Doncaster Salvation Army Band.

“The Evensong will be a chance to reflect on the life, work, and influence of Sir Nigel Gresley on the rail industry, ahead of a weekend full of celebrations to mark such a special milestone.

“We would love the people of Doncaster and beyond to join us at the city’s Minster as we look back on Sir Nigel Gresley’s legacy and celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth.”
