Manufacturing specialist Komatsu Europe has reached a production milestone at its Newcastle-based UK facility, with more than 200 employees now working on its latest assembly line.
The first UK-built PC220 crawler excavator has rolled off the line at Komatsu UK (KUK) in Chester-le-Street, marking a significant step for the facility as it approaches its 40th anniversary. The new production line supports hundreds of skilled roles and apprenticeships in the North East.
The 200-strong team, which includes 21 apprentices, is handling the assembly of the PC220, which the manufacturer states is its most technologically advanced model to date. Designed to enhance performance, safety, and operator comfort, its assembly in Tyne and Wear is intended to strengthen Komatsu’s European supply capability while positioning production closer to its primary markets.
Paul Dickinson, Crawler Excavator Product Manager at Komatsu Europe, said: “This milestone demonstrates Komatsu’s ongoing confidence in the North East and the capabilities of our people. Producing our most advanced machine here highlights the quality, expertise and commitment that exists within our UK workforce.
“At Komatsu UK, our customers and distributors value the advantages of local European production. By manufacturing closer to our markets, we not only shorten supply lead times but also significantly reduce product mileage and associated CO₂ emissions. Our UK facility amplifies Komatsu’s unwavering commitment to quality and reliability, while reinforcing our core principle of creating value together with our customers.”
To support delivery of the new model, the plant has introduced updated manufacturing technologies, including precision scanning equipment in fabrication and laser-based tracking systems during assembly. Workers have also undergone training in new digital tools to manage the increasingly software-driven nature of modern heavy machinery.
The launch of the assembly line represents a new chapter for the Japanese-owned manufacturer in the region, reinforcing its long-term presence and its role in supporting skilled industrial jobs.
The operational shift follows the manufacturer’s recent announcement that it will transition its UK distribution operations from Marubeni-Komatsu Ltd (MKL) to McHale Plant Sales Ltd.
