Another successful day in Burnsall was blessed with sunshine and warmth for the Annual Burnsall Feast and Sports. All stallholders reported that sales had been very good.

The day started off with the Classic Burnsall Duck Race. The event had been in doubt only days before as due to the low level the River Wharfe was not flowing very well. 1,100 ducks were launched off Burnsall Bridge and glided down to the finish line. 1st was 355 owned by Wendy Gibson; 2nd was 252 owned by Alice Daggett and 3rd was 566 owned by Tim Lockett.

Wendy Gibson ran the Children’s Races which were as popular as ever drawing good crowds to watch youngsters from Under 6 to 16 entering into the spirit of the day.

A total of 31 dogs and one wooden duck were entered into the Family Fun Pet Show. The judges, Ann Peart and Lindsay from Gam Farm, had a difficult task selecting the winners. Eventually they handed out the rosettes as follows. 1st Nancy – a 2-year-old Scottish Deerhound owned by Athene from York: 2nd Molly – an 8-year-old rescue dog, a wire-haired Dachshund owned by Jackson from Barden: 3rd Tetley – a 2-year-old Parsons Jack Russel owned by Victoria from Burnsall.

The wooden duck was entered by a member of the 9th Doncaster Scouts who were on their annual camp at Appletreewick. The older group, the Explorers, were at Bursall Sports from early on in the day and helped get the Green ready; helping with erecting the marquees, setting up equipment. They then carried on volunteering all day and were a great help to the organisers.

Burnsall Feast were pleased to have the presence of St. John’s and Upper Wharfedale Rescue; thankfully there were no major incidents just one or two bruises. Skipton Brass Band entertained everybody during the afternoon and their music was warmly received by all on the Green. Other stalls included Reverb – with a Teddy Bear Tombola, Chappo’s Corner, St. Wilfrid’s BBQ and Cake Stall, Burnsall Sports Raffle and Tombola and St. Mary the Virgin from Embsay.
